About St Lawrence

Where children flourish

Happy children make the best learners and when you step through the door you instantly get a sense of the warm and nurturing environment that sets St Lawrence apart. With just one class per year group, St Lawrence is a small, friendly school where children feel happy and secure, able to grow in confidence as they seize every opportunity to feed their curiosity and play a bigger part in all aspects of school life.

"Pupils respond well to the positive ethos of care and support within the school community."
Ofsted September 2014

“It is a happy nurturing environment with great teachers. Wonderful residential trips and the staging of performances from early on are greatly appreciated.  Everyone feels part of the St Lawrence family!”
Parent Survey July 2014

Learning to be outstanding

Prompted by our long-standing Headteacher’s retirement, the St Lawrence governing body took the decision to join The Howard Partnership Trust, the academy chain led out of the outstanding Howard of Effingham. Children at St Lawrence typically achieve above both the Surrey and national averages in the National Curriculum tests and joining The Howard Partnership Trust builds on this strong foundation and will enable the school to fulfil its ambition to deliver the very highest standards so that every child reaches their full potential, whatever their educational needs.

“New leadership, supported by experienced and knowledgeable governors, is improving teaching and raising expectations for pupils' achievement."

“We feel that the move to St Lawrence has been a very positive one. We have always been made to feel very welcome and we are delighted with the progress both of our boys have made.”
Gill Rolfe, Parent Survey July 2014

Inspirational teaching

Inspiring an enthusiasm for learning requires passionate teachers, able to combine creativity with best practice in the classroom. Languages, geography, drama, PE, art and computing taught by specialist teachers from The Howard are just some of the ways children across the school are benefiting. Also, uniquely among local schools, Year 6 children have spent their mornings in lessons at The Howard during the summer half term, extending their learning and making them ready for the move to secondary school in September.

“Year 6 pupils have become familiar with The Howard so it’ll be much easier to find our way around next year in Year 7. All in all this has been a great experience and made Year 6 more excited about secondary school.”
Evie Baldwin, Year 6 Pupil, July 2014

“Pupils enjoy learning and they have very positive attitudes to work. They listen well and answer teachers' questions enthusiastically."

Bringing out the best

Bringing out the individual talents of every child, cultivating both self-esteem and a sense of team spirit is at the heart of what St Lawrence does best. An outstanding programme of residential trips, the opportunity to participate in a Civic Award (a primary school version of the Duke of Edinburgh award) and a range of drama, sports, music and other extra-curricular activities all contribute to this.

“Extra activities add to pupils' enjoyment of school. They visit local places of interest as well as taking part in residential visits to places further afield. This promotes their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development well.

“When St Lawrence children join us, they demonstrate self-confidence and independence which helps them to manage in a larger school."

A stimulating learning environment

The school has large, bright classrooms all equipped with computers and most with access to their own outside space. St Lawrence also has a fabulous new hall and kitchen, a large school field, an orchard, an allotment, a playground with a quiet area, an outside classroom, a children’s kitchen and, of course, a library.

“The buzz of excited children who are keen to learn and enjoy the friendships they have formed. The enthusiasm of teachers and teaching assistants. The great facilities and outside space.”
Georgia King, Parent Survey 2014

“Pupils are friendly and courteous at all times. They get on very well together in class and in the playground. They listen to each other in class and they readily help each other when needed. Older pupils enjoy helping younger ones at lunchtimes."
